As a company we formed in 1899, we are 107 years old! We are still going strong today having performed in Plymouth in three centuries! In the 19th century we were known by a different name, we then became known as The City of Plymouth Operatic Society. That was until 2002 when we took stock of what we were all about and how many changes we had seen over the years.
We decided it was time that we moved our name into the 21st Century, just as we had with our productions. So, we are now called Plymouth Theatre Company.
We have presented over 140 productions over the years, from Merrie England to Me And My Girl and from Calamity Jane to Crazy For You. We have not only performed musicals but also Gilbert and Sullivan, Music Hall, Vaudeville, Concerts and pantomime!
We've used many venues in Plymouth including, The Hoe Theatre and The Globe Theatre but since 1988 we've had a permanent home - a theatre that we own ourselves - the Devonport Playhouse.
Not only do we perform in the Playhouse but also in Plymouth Theatre Royal. We have produced many acclaimed shows, being affiliated to NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association), and are regularly reviewed and win awards.
Recently we have won awards for our productions of Me and My Girl and Crazy For You.
Our members have also been seen in 'Music of the Night' which has been running every two years in the Royal Citadel, Plymouth since 1992. Our talented company allows us to provide many of the leading soloists for the productions as well as many of the dancers and behind the scenes crew.
