History

Plymouth Theatre Company purchased the Devonport Playhouse in 1988. It was a big gamble - a dream of turning a church into a theatre was a big risk - but thanks to the devotion of many members, paint pots came out, walls were knocked down, a stage was constructed and endless fire regulations met. Three months later the first concert was performed and of course the rest really is history! The Theatre continues to benefit from the support of members and patrons and has had many improvements over the years and continues to go from strength to strength.

The Theatre

The auditorium seats 308, split between stalls and circle.

The unique performance area comprises an upper and main stage, as well as two recently remodeled side extensions.
An interesting feature of our theatre is that it does not have a proscenium arch, rather like the Theatre Royal Plymouth’s Drum, the Barbican Theatre and the Wharf Theatre. This has allowed much flexibility in productions, as well as successful inventive experiment and a fresh approach to staging. The area remains flexible enough to stage traditional musical productions.
